Softball Sweeps Oberlin

Last week, Wittenberg Softball swept Oberlin in a double header. The wins improved the Tigers to an overall 14-2 record and a 7-3 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The early match-up resulted in a 9-3 victory over Oberlin. Oberlin started the first game with a home run in the bottom of the first inning. Wittenberg’s scoring started in the top of the second, taking control with two runs and holding on to the lead for the rest of the game. The Tigers produced an impressive 17 hits off of 35 at-bats as a team. Junior Shannon Lance led the team in this category, chipping in four hits of her own, on just five at-bats. Lance also had three runs batted in. Freshman Charlee Clark added three hits of her own, while four other Tigers each added two.

From the mound, freshman Chelsea Zang faced 32 batters, while only allowing five hits and three runs. Zang also had four strikeouts. Oberlin was only able to achieve five hits off of 27 at-bats.

In the later match-up, the Tigers again outscored the Yeowomen, this time 14-6. To start the game, Oberlin scored four runs on the Tigers in the first inning. Wittenberg quickly answered with eight runs of their own on four hits to take the lead from the Yeowomen. In the top of the fourth, Wittenberg scored four more runs in part due to Oberlin’s three fielding errors. The Tigers produced 13 hits from 38 at-bats in this second match-up, while Oberlin posted 10 hits off of 31 at-bats.

Freshman pitcher Abby Haab faced 34 batters in the second game. Haab allowed 10 hits that allowed six runs for Oberlin. Haab also had three strikeouts.

On the day, three Tigers had home runs. Junior Kaela Hughes and sophomore Casey Hobbs both homered in the second match-up, while Zang homered in the first game.

The Tigers will continue the rest of their season with all home games at Betty Dillahunt Field. Wittenberg will battle the DePauw Tigers in a double header on Wednesday, April 22.
