The first loss to Denison in two years seemed to have kicked the Wittenberg men’s lacrosse team into gear, as they bounced back to defeat Wooster 7-6. It was a close, low scoring rivalry match-up, and the win came just in time to give the Tigers some momentum going into the upcoming OWU game.
Wooster started the game off strong by controlling the offensive possessions and tallying up two unanswered goals just minutes into the first quarter. The Tigers seemed to be having trouble executing on offense until sophomore midfielder Jack Bornhofen capitalized on the first extra-man opportunity of the game. Minutes later, the junior attackman Tyler Hall evened up the score with a goal assisted by freshman attackman Andrew Morrison.
Morrison struck again in the second quarter with a score assisted by junior midfielder Alex Previte, and the Tigers took the lead 3-2. But this lead was only temporary as the Scots evened the score at three, and then pulled ahead of the home team under a minute later. Wittenberg was unable to answer offensively and the game went into halftime with a score of 4-3 in favor of Wooster.
Into the third quarter, the Wittenberg freshman attackman Brandon Keiser evened up the score with an unassisted goal. This put the Tigers in position to take the lead and it was Morrison who again made the difference, and Wittenberg took control with a score of 5-4. Unfortunately a slashing call gave the Scots a man-up opportunity that put them in position to tie the game up, and the conference match went into the final period with the score tied at five.
Wooster scored once more minutes into the fourth quarter, but it was Morrison once again that bailed out the Tigers and the score sat at 6-6 with three minutes left in regulation. The Tigers then got the possession off of the next face off and, after a timeout, Bornhofen snuck one by the Scots net minder. Wooster was unable to score in the final two minutes of the game and Wittenberg came out on top as time ran out.
The Tigers will travel to Delaware, Ohio for their next game against Ohio Wesleyan which will be played at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25.
