Welcome back to campus.  As most of you know, I was sworn in as the Chief of Police last March.  Since then, I have been spending a considerable amount of my time learning as much as I can about the students, faculty and staff.  I believe that it is our responsibility to know the needs of the entire campus so that we can provide the tailored service that all of you deserve.
My primary focus is to strengthen the current relationship between our officers and students.  The relationship between the police division and our student body is imperative.  We are here to serve and protect all of you, and I am here to ensure that we accomplish that goal.
Over the summer, we trained a group of officers to patrol the campus on bicycles.  This training, coupled with added foot patrol, will put our officers in a position to address your needs more efficiently and effectively. More importantly, officers will be more accessible, which will assist our relationship-building. Additionally, we are working with University Communications to communicate with all of you through Facebook.  Periodically throughout the year, we will be posting safety and/or general police information on Facebook.
Finally, I would like to provide you a forum in The Torch where you can ask general questions about our police division or ask general questions about law enforcement.  I will not be able to discuss particulars of cases, because the cases that we deal with are real, and the parties involved deserve privacy. As always, if you have questions in regards to specific incidents, I am happy to discuss them with you in a more private setting.
I look forward to working with you and addressing any questions or concerns you may have via this column.  Submit your questions or concerns for the Torch column to ask.fm/WittenbergPD
